The Satellite Communications Network of Excellence “SatNEx” IV - Call of Order 2 Part 1, 2017/2018, Project title: "Alternative security schemes for integrated satellite terrestrial networks", Local Project Leader Prof. Franco Davoli and Prof. Mario Marchese, Funded by European Space Agency (ESA) Brief Description: SatNEx is a European Network of Experts for satellite communications, coordinated by the German Aerospace Center DLR. The first two phases of SatNEx were funded by the EU from 2004 to 2009. The third phase, SatNEx-III, comprises 17 partners and is co-funded by ESA from 2010 to 2013. A core team consisting of DLR, University of Surrey, and University of Bologna is coordinating the SatNEx-III research activities. Specific research tasks are contracted to partners in the frame of annual “Call-off Orders”. SatNEx-III will be concluded in early 2014, and followed by SatNEx-IV. SatNEx-IV activities aim to study medium/long term directions of satellite telecommunication systems for any of the commercial or institutional applications that can be considered appealing by key players but still not mature enough for attracting industry or initiating dedicated ESA R&D activities. The key objectives of the SatNex IV Network of Experts can be summarized as:
Early identification, exploration and scientific assessment of promising new R&D avenues for satellite telecom networks for possible injection in ESA’s R&D programs;
Detection and preliminary assessment of promising terrestrial telecommunication technology into space telecom applications.
Enhanced cooperation between the European/Canadian industry and research institutions on telecom satellite applied research subjects of common interest.
